Going All In; and Business Terror before Halloween
by Jeff RosenbergIn earlier Blogenbergs I’ve posted about how I’m betting that we know where PR is going – narrower and narrower, more and more segmented, embracing social networking and citizen journalism. Am I an “out in front” progressive business owner, or Don Quixote? The income statements will tell us.
We just submitted an extremely creative proposal to reach youth with messaging built entirely on a social networking platform, never touching traditional media. If we win, it will work. The question is, will the screening committee “get it”? I’ll let you know.
And once again, I’ve been asked by a potential client, one who has a track record of building successful organizations, why not hold a press conference? Press conferences can be very effective – for the right news hook. But at a time when traditional media numbers are declining and people are attaching credibility to a wider range of media sources – from MySpace to blogs to conversations with a neighbor – we have to go beyond traditional media outlets and traditional PR tactics. And that’s what we are getting very good at doing.
And I’m betting that the income statements are going to agree.

I’m hiring a new guy. For a small business owner, that’s a real-life haunted house. The guy we’re hiring – him, I couldn’t be more impressed with. But I’ve got to bring him up to speed. I have to add him to our benefits package. I have to get him all the forms. I have to expand the computer network. I need another phone. I had to buy new office furniture. Oh yeah, and I’ve got to pay him.
A real-life haunted house seems like a lot more fun!
Bonus Blogenberg: My favorite airport in the world is now Fayetteville, Arkansas. Why? Because the room for smokers is not exactly a room. It’s out the front door, across the street, across a median, across another street, and on an uncovered plot of grass. Talk about a non-smoking airport!
